As a student in the Netherlands, you’ve collected a fair share of knowledge from high school and university. Imagine if there were a job where you could share this knowledge with people and get paid for it. Well, you’re in luck, because there is! You can work at Superprof: a tutoring company which allows anyone to sign up to provide tutoring or lessons in their subject of choice. It’s pretty easy: you list your qualifications and skill set and students looking for tutors can come to you. You decide when you’re available to teach, so you can work when it best works for you.
To find out more about working at Superprof, we interviewed two tutors to find out what they think of the job.
1. How did you find Superprof and get the idea to become a tutor?
Jana: “I was looking for a part-time job next to my studies, but since my schedule is quite busy, I wanted something flexible where I could set my own working hours. I was browsing through the Jobs section on College Life and I stumbled upon Superprof. It seemed like a nice way to earn some cash, plus I’m really happy when I can help people out or share my knowledge with them. Superprof seemed like a space where I could do exactly that, so I just decided to give it a try and signed up.”
Maria: “I found out about Superprof via the College life Facebook page.”
2. What’s your favorite part about working at Superprof?
Jana: “I offer tutoring in Czech, English, German and violin at various levels. What I like about it is that you meet different people with different needs who are interested in different things, in terms of learning as well as in terms of their own hobbies and interests. Every lesson and every person is unique, so working with individuals from different backgrounds not only helps me to grow as a person and as a teacher but it also motivates me to work on my own skills and to keep improving.”
Maria: “So far I’ve been helping students with topics in statistics and economics, additionally I have helped students perform data analysis for their theses.”
3. How does the current workload in terms of time, flexibility, etc. compare to your expectations?
Jana: “I was a bit skeptical at first and I didn’t expect that people would actually respond to my ads, so it was quite a pleasant surprise to receive so many messages from people who were interested in my lessons. I currently teach two hours per week. I usually set a day and time in the week with my student which works for both of us and then we follow that, but rescheduling if necessary is never a problem. I would say that the job definitely matches the description.”
Maria: “The job is perfectly flexible though there are not many students contacting me.”
4. Is there something that you enjoy less about working at Superprof?
Jana: “It is quite an unstable source of income since you never know if you’ll actually get contacted by people and if they’ll eventually choose you as your tutor, so I guess it’s not something that you can rely on 100% to earn you money. I’ve also received one or two shady messages from people asking me to help them with stretching or muscle exercise etc., but I usually just ignore those.”
Maria: “I can’t think of something that reduces the enjoyment of the job.”
5. Has any previous work experience helped you with working at Superprof?
Jana: “When I was in high school, I used to help a younger student with English, so I kind of already had an idea of what tutoring is about.”
Maria: “My previous experience is my preparation for the same courses in which I tutor.”
6. Would you recommend working at Superprof to others?
Jana: “I would recommend it to anyone who is passionate about sharing their knowledge and skills with people. I think Superprof is a great way to earn some cash as a student because you are completely free to set your working hours, your price and the number of students you accept. As a bonus, you get to meet many interesting and enthusiastic people who are eager to learn.”
Maria: “I would recommend the job since it’s perfectly flexible in terms of time, price, workload, etc.”
