Requirements You Need to Meet for Studiefinanciering

Now that you know what student financing consists of in the Netherlands, and the basics about it, what exactly are the requirements you have to meet to be able to receive all this?

There are a couple of general requirements you need to meet in order to be able to apply for student finance in the Netherlands.

  • You must be a Dutch national or have the same rights as a Dutch national (depends on resident permit/nationality)
  • Or, you must be an EU/EEA or Swiss national
  • Must be registered in full-time or dual degree program in higher vocational education (HBO) or university
  • Must be under 30
  • You must also be register with a city hall (this, you will find in each Dutch city). When you register, you get a citizen service number, so-called BSN.
  • You must have a Dutch bank account
  • You must have a DigiD number*

If you are not Dutch, Swiss, or EU/EEA national, there are other ways to receive financing. This could be in the form of scholarships. However, if you have a residence permit type I, II, III, IV or V, you might be eligible for limited funding.

*What is a DigiD number? This is your Digital Identification. You can use it to access government services. You need this for things like health insurance or to do your taxes. When you register at a city hall and receive your BSN. Your DigiD number is important because you need it to apply for student financing.

Requirements for the tuition fees loan

You need to be a resident of the EU/EEA or Switzerland.

Requirements for the student loan

You have EU/EEA or Swiss residency (a passport) and you have been living in the Netherlands for the last 5 years (at minimum).

Or:

If you have not lived in the Netherlands for the last 5 years, the only way to receive both the loan and supplementary grant is if you are employed and working for at least 56 hours a month (around 14 hours per week) for a Dutch employer.

Requirements for the supplementary grant

You must meet the requirements for the student loan & your parent’s income (combined) must be lower than €50.000 per year.

You must meet the requirements for the student loan.
